JROTC prepares you for life, not for the military.
Junior ROTC is an elective high school course you take during regular school hours but includes many out-of-classroom activities. We cover the basics of history, government, technology awareness, and current events. But we also teach leadership skills (how to motivate others) and personal skills (how to study, take tests, and interview for jobs). We offer extracurricular activities like drill team, color guard, physical training, and precision shooting. You might even get the chance to go to a JROTC summer camp where you'll train on confidence courses, play team sports, and learn land navigation.
No JROTC cadet is under any obligation to join the military. Our interest is simply to give you an opportunity to develop and improve yourself in ways schools generally don't offer. We aren't promoting the military lifestyle, but we do use military type skills to teach self-discipline, confidence and pride in a job well done. It is in this sense that Junior ROTC is part of the Army's service to the nation.
JROTC is designed to develop leadership and prepare students for a future as a responsible American, acquaint them with the organization of the armed forces, teach them weapon safety and marksmanship, basic drill, hygiene and first aid, map reading and techniques of oral communication. Throughout the sequence, these goals are broadened to include teamwork, problem solving skills, leadership seminars, advanced drill and practical exercises in command, ceremonies and parades, military history and Senior ROTC, and service/career training opportunities. Extracurricular activities are available and participation is encouraged. Uniforms will be issued at no cost to cadets. Wearing of uniforms at designated periods is mandatory (once every Wednesday). Ability to participate in physical fitness training is required.
